6.2.2. Sulfur Recovery and Tail Gas Treating | netl.doe.gov

The SCOT unit removes nearly all of the remaining sulfur—in the form of a tail-gas stream of unreacted sulfur, H 2 S, SO 2, and carbonyl sulfide (COS)—that the Claus unit misses. The SCOT unit uses a cobalt-molybdenum catalyst to convert SO 2 to H 2 S, which is then removed in an absorber. Altogether, this process series approach can achieve a typical overall sulfur recovery of 99.8%.

SULPHUR PLANT and TAIL GAS TREATING UNIT - STARTUP …

Before storage, liquid sulfur streams from the process gas cooler, the sulfur condensers and from the final sulfur separator are routed to the degassing unit, where the gases (primarily H 2 S) dissolved in the sulfur are removed. The tail gas from the Claus process still containing combustible components and sulfur compounds (H 2 S, H 2 and CO) is either burned in an incineration unit or further desulfurized in a downstream tail gas …

released along with hydrocarbons as a source rock matures. Sulfur compounds in raw gas typically need to be removed during processing, which is an energy intensive process. Thus, natural gas with high sulfur content, termed "sour gas", commands a lower market price than gas with low sulfur content, …

Sulfur deposition in a gas turbine natural gas fuel

This is also called the tail gas treatment unit. Tail gas from the sulfur recovery unit is mixed with hydrogen after heated and send to the hydrogenation reactor, where the H2S is formed under the catalyzing reaction. So the carbon disulfide can be hydrolyzed. The reaction equation is shown below: SO2 + 3H2 → H2S + 2H2O SY + yH2 → yH2S
